UPDATE MAR 2016: MyLibrary is an archive of older PC games that were played before there was any thought of a website. As such, there is no featured review, screenshots or potential fixes for tech issues. There is however, links to as much information as could be gathered in hindsight. The Library section will remain static as all new game additions will instead be in the FEATURES section as they are played and reviewed. It is therefore not a full list of PC games on the site. This section is only to provide some insight on a number of games that are unlikely to be covered in depth unless replayed at some future time. Although most of these games are quite good, they are also quite old and many of the original disc copies present challenges to run. Some of them are still playable with fixes, but will require research on how to get them running. Disc versions are the most problematic if they use SafeDisc or SecuRom as Microsoft has stripped support for these from Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista. The following is an article How To Geek with possible solutions. You can still purchase many of these digitally, but be careful if you want to collect older disc versions.

Without fail, a new Call of Duty game has been released yearly, although some people might argue with the word new. The franchise has had its ups and downs in terms of criticism, but it remains a highly popular series none-the-less. Whether you agree or disagree with the way they pump out these games, you can't argue with success. Some of them have better single-player campaigns than others and if it wasn't for the way Activision keeps the prices inflated, I would probably buy more of them.

The Half-Life games are some of the most important in PC gaming history. With Valve's innovation of their own distribution and update platform called Steam, the series launched them into the stratosphere to become one of the most influential companies in the PC gaming industry. People so love the iconic protagonist Gordon Freeman, that even after so many years of utter silence from Valve on the status of this series, people still hold out hope for Half-Life 3. In the meantime, there's a kazillion mods to play.
HALF-LIFE 2 BLUE SHIFT

Blue Shift is a stand-alone expansion pack for Half-Life, developed by Gearbox and Valve. It takes place within the same setting and events of Half-Life as seen through the eyes of a security guard for the Black Mesa Research Facility. The game is fairly short and lacks new content, but it did come with a HD pack. If nothing else, it gives you that Half-Life fix you've been missing.
HALF-LIFE 2 OPPOSING FORCE

  • Genre: First-person shooter

Opposing Force, developed by Gearbox and Valve, was the first expansion pack for Half-Life. As in Blue Shift, it takes place within the same setting and events of Half-Life. You assume the role of Adrian Shepard, one of the U.S. marines sent by the government to silence the witnesses at Black Mesa. It adds several new weapons and character models and received good critical reviews at release. An enterprising fellow has made a sequel that was approved by Valve through the Greenlight process.
HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED

  • Halo 3
  • Halo Reach (a prequel)
  • Halo 4 (a new trilogy)
  • Halo 5: Guardians

Halo was released as a Microsoft exclusive, received rave reviews, and won many awards. The franchise is still active today and this game is often cited as the main reason for the Xbox's success. A remake called Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was released in 2011. Of the cannon games, only Halo 1 & 2 made it to PC and I can never quite forgive Microsoft for making Halo 2 exclusively for their then new OS, Vista. This game is still active and Bungie released a new patch when Gamespy closed.

id Software's Quake Engine made several advances in 3D gaming allowing users to partially program the game and popularize the making of mods. One of the first was Team Fortress, developed by Valve and later ported to their own GoldSrc engine. Quake has no true sequel with Quake 2 thematically changing direction and Quake 3 lacking a standard single-player campaign. QuakeCon is an annual event where people gather together for North America's largest free LAN party.

The Unreal Engine was developed by Epic Games and first showcased in the game Unreal. The engine became popular due to its architecture and scripting language, which made it easy to mod. In 2014, Epic released Unreal Engine 4 and its source code to the development community through a subscription model but, in 2015, made this free with a 5% royalty fee on games released. They also launched the Unreal Marketplace where subscribers can buy and sell community created content.

Unreal Tournament is not really a single-player game. Although you can use this mode playing against bots, it's generally considered only a training ground for multiplayer. Epic Games is currently building a new Unreal Tournament in collaboration between themselves, gamers and developers. You can download and play it now in its pre Alpha phase. Once done, the game will be free, but Epic plans on paying for it with a share of the funds derived from their marketplace.

Jericho is a codename for a playable seven person team with varying supernatural abilities. Aside from Clive Barker's contribution to the content and narrative, it is not related to any of the other games sporting his name. The game had less than stellar reviews being criticized for its poorly implemented everything. Amazon seems to be the only place it's available for sale. The developer, MercurySteam, is most known for their Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series.
KILLING FLOOR
game box
  • Genre: First-person shooter

  • Publisher: Tripwire
  • Platforms: Windows, OS X, Linux

  • Killing Floor 2
screenshot
Killing Floor started its life as a total conversion mod of Unreal Tournament 2004. In a deal with Tripwire, a full retail version was announced in 2009 and in 2012 it was made a Steam exclusive. In Dec 2014, Tripwire announced that it had sold almost 3 million copies on PC. Although there is a single-player mode, it's one of those cases of not really. The game is a six-person co-op and meant to be a multiplayer experience. Killing Floor 2 was released in Apr 2015.
LEFT 4 DEAD
game box
  • Genre: FPS, survival horror
  • Developer: Turtle Rock
  • Publisher: Valve

  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
Other Games in Series
  • Left 4 Dead 2

  • L4D 2 now includes all of the maps from the original L4D, but this game is also still for sale
screenshot
Turtle Rock Studios was acquired by Valve in 2008 and renamed Valve South. When the situation didn't work out, the branch was shut down. It was then re-established as an independent company in 2010, with Valve agreeing to allow them to use its original name Turtle Rock along with the logo, while Valve retained the rights to the Left 4 Dead IP. They did maintain a relationshp with Valve, however, and worked with them on Counter-Strike and Left 4 Dead 2 before going on to independently develop Evolve.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
game box
  • Genre: FPS, survival horror
  • Developer: GSC Game World
  • Publisher: THQ
  • Platforms: Windows
  • Release Date: PC March 2007
  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
screenshot
This game had a release date of 2003, but was pushed back so many times that some considered it to be vaporware. It did release in 2007 to good reviews, but suffered from technical issues and stuttering. Regardless, it was very popular and the series remains a favourite today. After GSC dissolved in 2011, a company called West Games arose on Kickstarter regarding a new Stalker game, however, they did not own the IP and it was shut down. GSC reformed in Dec 2014, stirring hope for a new Stalker game.
THIRD PERSON SHOOTERS/TACTICAL SHOOTERS
MAX PAYNE 2 The Fall of Max Payne

  • Release Date: PC Oct 2003
  • Modes: Single-player
Other Games in Series
  • Max Payne
  • Max Payne 3

  • This game will likely need some unofficial fixes applied
screenshot
In Dec 2001, Take-Two announced the acquisition of the Max Payne franchise and commissioned Remedy Entertainment to develop Max Payne 2. Despite highly positive reviews and industry awards, according to Take-Two, this game sold poorly. The only consistent criticism was its length. The games were best known for their film-noir style and for popularizing the bullet-time mechanic. Although Remedy gave feedback, it was Rockstar Games, who are owned by Take-Two, that developed Max Payne 3.
TOM CLANCY'S Rainbow Six Lockdown
game box
  • Genre: Tactical shooter
  • Developer: Red Storm Ent
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Platforms: Windows, Xbox, PS2, GameCube, Mobile
  • Release Date: PC June 2005
  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
Other Games in Series

  • May require a third-party fix
screenshot
Lockdown is the fourth game in the Rainbow Six series. This is a squad-based game and missions are broken up into linear levels. The change in gameplay from previous games was controversial and the PC version received significantly lower ratings than the other games to date. The first Rainbow Six was released in 1998 and went on to spawn various expansion packs and sequels for console and PC.
PROBLEMATIC FPS GAMES
BATTLEFIELD 1942
game box
  • Genre: First-person shooter
  • Developer: Digital Illusions
  • Publisher: Electronic Arts
  • Platforms: Windows, OS X
  • Release Date: PC Sept 2002
  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
Other Games in Series

Origin removed this game from their store and digital copies are no longer available. Any retail version includes the problematic SafeDisc. Official servers are also closed. However, there are free versions floating around on the internet and some people are still playing. Check the forum and patch links for solutions. This is a very successful series with games pumped out every year. The latest, Battlefield: Hardline did not receive particularly good user reviews, although it did all right with the critics.
MEDAL OF HONOR: Allied Assault
game box
  • Genre: First-person shooter
  • Developer: 2015, Inc
  • Publisher: Microsoft, EA
  • Platforms: Windows, OS X, Linux
  • Release Date: PC Jan 2002
  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
Other Games in Series
  • See List
  • Only War Chest Edition or downloads work on 64 bit systems
  • Servers have been closed and will require third-party solutions
screenshot
This is the 3rd game in the series, but the first for PC. The series was created by Steven Spielberg who poured his heart and soul into making the first Medal of Honor against great odds. So, it's kinda sad that his game development company, Dreamworks Interactive, and the IP, was sold to Electronic Arts just before publication. So many people had doubted the direction he took this in but ironically, it ended up being the major hit that would have allowed Dreamworks to stay in business.
NO ONE LIVES FOREVER 2
game box
  • Genre: First-person shooter
  • Developer: Monolith
  • Publisher: Microsoft Windows, Sierra
  • Platforms: Windows, OS X
  • Release Date: PC Sept 2002
  • Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
Other Games in Series
  • The Operative: No One Lives Forever
screenshot
A great series that is unfortunately no longer available. Night Dive Studios, who rescued System Shock and Wizardry, tried to revive this franchise and applied for a trademark in 2014, but hit a wall. Activision, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros proved unwilling to make any effort to determine between them who actually owned the rights. Warner Bros. seemed to have the biggest claim, but would not commit to a deal. There are a few private copies for sale floating around, but you'll pay a bomb for them.
