Call of Juarez Gunslinger takes place in the days of the Amercian Wild West and players love it. Perhaps because Westerns have been under-represented in games and these offer a somewhat refreshing change to first-person shooters dominated by war and sci-fi themes. But aside from that, it's just an entertaining game that relishes in the humour of the exaggerated narratives related by the character.

Our protagonist, Silas Greaves, is a man bent on revenge who turns bounty hunter while in pursuit of his ultimate goal, the men who killed his brothers. The story is not continuous, but instead chains vignettes together through the mechanism of Silas sitting in a bar and recounting his episodes with various historically notorious Wild West figures in exchange for free drinks. His story spans 40 years as he obsessively tracks down the murderous bandits. However, his audience becomes increasingly skeptical as Silas' claims of killing such figures as Billy the Kid, Jesse James and Butch Cassidy start to sound rather outlandish. If Silas get's caught in a whopper, the game world will suddenly adjust to a more believable re-telling of the tale. Story-wise, the game is not related to any previous Call of Juarez games.

Each episode slots you into an area with a specific mission and although the map appears huge, it's actually quite narrow and linear. If you start to wander off that particular story mission, the game will give you a warning. If you continue, it will throw you back to the checkpoint. So there is no free roam.

The game is a first-person shooter and is quite difficult on normal mode. This was par for the course on games of this era. Upgrades consist of 3 paths; short-range, medium range, and long-range fighting. The upgrade wheel will reflect this choice in the types of special weapons they unlock. Weapon choices are relatively small for a FPS and consist of variations on handguns, shotguns and rifles as well as throwable dynamite.

Silas also has an ability that is more or less like bullet time, but is called concentration. You can refill your concentration level by killing enemies. How you kill them and chaining kills will determine how fast this will fill up again once depleted. You also have "last chance" that kicks in when you are near death. You can also get caught by a slo mo bullet if the enemy gets a bead on you. In this case, you can survive it if you dodge in the right direction, which requires paying attention to the trajectory of the bullet.

The whole premise of every episode is to fight your way through gangs until you reach the main villain. You will then either have to overcome the boss, who has some kind of speciality, or engage in a duel with them. Duels utilize a mechanic that is different from the rest of the game. It's a combination of using focus and hand speed and both need constant tweaking while you are engaged in this mode. If you draw first, it's counted as a dishonourable kill and you lose any bonus. It's a feature that I wasn't particularly fond off. There is a separate duel mode that you can practice in.

Graphics use cel-shading, but not to same extent seen in Borderlands and cut-scenes are still-life, hand-drawn images. Techland uses its own Chrome engine and the environments are beautifully rendered. It's also a well-made game with few bugs.

The game is a lot of fun, but it is fairly combat repetitive. You have guns, guns, guns or dynamite. There is a melee move, but it doesn't pay to get close to the enemy. They are fairly dead shots and tend to come at you in numbers. You will run into the occasional ambush where there is no escape and not much cover as well as one or two timed sequences.

The game has several modes, New Game + and True West difficulty are additional modes that open up once you beat the game. There is Archive Mode and Recollections mode and collectibles called "Nuggets of Truth".

Game Issues Experienced

The only problem I experienced was on the initial running of the game when it seemed to freeze. I alt-tabbed out and back in and it resolved itself.

When experiencing some trouble with the duels, I turned up the Duelling Sensitivity in the options

Development Note

Poland seems to breed passionate game developers and Techland is no exception. After releasing a PC game called Crime Cities in 2001, their first success story as a team was the creation of the Chrome engine, which put them on the map as software developers.

Using their in-house engine, they went on to develop a number of games, but were acclaimed for the Chrome and the Call of Juarez franchises, which were commercial successes. In 2011, they released Dead Island to positive reviews, but the sequel Dead Island Riptide did not fair so well.

However, sticking with the zombie theme, Dying Light was released in 2015 and outperformed in sales many other heavy hitters of the time. Heavily supported, it continues to be very popular enjoying regular updates. That's because Techland loves what Dying Light has become.

Recently, they announced ten free DLC to be released over the coming year and the opening of their own digital game store called Gemly. It currently sells Techland products as well as some third-party publishers games.
